frugal family fun - saving while eating out

Frugal Family Fun – Saving While Eating Out

Do you have a Eating Out Budget? We do, but it’s very small and I work really hard to make it work :)

I know that we all appreciate a night out of the kitchen every now and then and there are ways to save while eating out.

Here are some of my favorites:

Happy Hour – Eat during “Happy Hour” most restaurants have discounted appetizers, drinks, and even meal specials before 6 or 7 p.m.  We have saved over 50% on our bill by doing this.

Kids Eat Free – Call ahead to your favorite spot and see if there are certain nights where they offer “Kids Eat Free” specials.  Chili’s does that almost weekly and many of my local restaurants do that on Tuesdays.  Actually you can grab your Chilis FREE Kids Meals coupon (valid thru 4/28).  There is also a Olive Garden Coupon that is valid for today 4/25 for Kids Eat Free.

Kids Meals vs. Adult Meals – Do your kids actually eat a whole meal?  Mine never do – they fill up on the bread or chips that come out first and by the time their dinner comes they don’t eat it all.  So, about 99% of the time, I have them split one.  Also, look at the adult meals your child(ren) may like, it may be cheaper to have them split an adult meal than get two kids meals.

Getting An Appetizer? – If you are planning on ordering an appetizer – watch what you order for dinner!  If we get an appetizer, I can almost never finish my whole meal.  So, Steve and I will split something or I just order a salad or get a bowl of soup :)

Remember your leftovers! -  I know that sounds silly, but how many times have you left the restaurant with that white box still on the table?  I know I can’t be the only one.  Leftovers make for a great lunch the next day ;)

ALWAYS, look at Restaurant.com and some of your daily deal sites for local restaurant deals.  I know that sometimes all the e-mails can be overwhelming, so use a separate e-mail address when you sign up, but those daily deals can lead to 50-90% off at some of your favorite places.

My favorite daily deal sites for restaurant deals are LivingSocial.com and Groupon.

If you have some ideas – please share them in the comments so that we can all read them.

Have Fun Saving While Eating Out!

Frugal Family Fun - Handmade Fun Gift Ideas

Frugal Family Fun – Handmade Fun Gift Ideas

We just got back from the beach two days ago and we have bags and bags of seashells. There is just something about walking on the beach – you HAVE to pick up shells! And since it was me, my mom, and both kiddos constantly on the look out for fun finds, you can imagine just how many we have :)

My husband’s first question of course was “What are we going to do with all these shells?” So, that got me thinking about what we CAN do with all these shells. There are a bunch of crafts that we can do!

Make a Photo Frame

  • Buy a cheap picture frame from the Dollar Store….Target sometimes has them in the Dollar Bin too
  • Have the kids pick out their favorite shells
  • Glue them around the frame
  • And you have a FUN frame that cost next to nothing

This would make an excellent gift idea too – remember Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are coming up. Print one of your favorite pictures and put it in the frame for a gift that everyone is sure to love.

Here’s another idea…

Make a Fun Decoration

  • Get a mason jar (any glass jar will do really)
  • Fill it with shells
  • You can also add some sand at the bottom if you have it available
  • Get some cute ribbon and time it around the top of the jar and you have another cute gift idea

I actually have one of these in my bathroom – it makes for an adorable decoration!

Didn’t go to the beach recently?  That’s Ok – you can still do all these FUN ideas with other things…Head outside and go for a walk – have the kids find small stones, twigs, even leaves!  You can use those instead of shells for your fun frames and decorations.  Are you still covered in snow and can’t head outside?  Grab different colors of construction paper and have the kiddos draw seashells and leaves etc and then use with those :)   You can even add potpourri to make it smell pretty!

If you need some FREE pictures to go in your frames, don’t forget about the FREE 25 prints from Walgreens that I just told you about.  Remember it is valid today, 4/4 only!

happy easter

Frugal Family Fun – Easter Craft and Recipe

Good afternoon and Happy Thursday! Can you believe that Easter is just around the corner? I thought that this week I would share a few recipe ideas, a fun craft, and a fun way to do your Easter Egg Hunt :)

duck craft

What You Need:

  • Tacky Glue
  • Orange craft foam
  • 1 tennis ball
  • 2 googly eyes
  • 1 2-inch yellow pom-pom
  • Yellow and orange craft feathers
  • Black permanent marker

What You Do:

  • Use tacky glue to glue together two 4-inch squares of orange craft foam.
  • When the glue is dry, cut out a 1-piece set of webbed feet, then glue a tennis ball to the feet.
  • Glue 2 googly eyes and 2 duck bill shapes cut from more orange craft foam to a 2-inch yellow pom-pom, then glue the pom-pom to the tennis ball.
  • For the wings and a tail, glue yellow and orange craft feathers to the sides and back of the duck.
  • Dot nostrils on the top of the bill with a permanent marker.

Here is a fun recipe that I make at home too – I just haven’t shaped mine to look like an Easter egg yet. I actually make mine with the pizza crust, but I saw a recipe that suggested biscuits, so I included that in there too :)

What You Need:

  • 1 (16.3-ounce) tube buttermilk biscuit dough (or pizza dough)
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh garlic
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded part-skim mozzarella or cheddar cheese
  • Toppings – scrambled eggs, cooked sausage, bacon, ham – anything that you would normally like with your breakfast!
  • The peppers add some FUN color :)

What You Do:

  • Pull apart each biscuit to make 2 thinner, even layers. Place all the dough pieces on an ungreased cookie sheet and flatten them gently, gradually molding them together to form a single egg shape.
*If using pizza dough, just shape into an Easter Egg :)
  • Bake at 350 for 8 minutes, then remove the crust from the oven and let it cool.
  • Mix together the oil, parsley, and garlic in a small bowl. Brush this mixture over the cooled crust. Cover the crust evenly with the cheese
  • Add all your fun toppings to create patterns so that the pizza looks like a decorated Easter egg
  • Return it to the oven until the cheese is melted, about 5 to 10 minutes. Serve warm.

I also shared a Strawberry Chocolate Truffle recipe the other day if you want to check that out :)

And finally – if you are looking for a FUN and different way to do your Easter Basket or Easter egg hunt this year, this is how my grandparents used to do it when I was young and it was so much fun…

Grab a ball of yarn/string and make a trail all over the house! Go over and under things, back and forth from various rooms and while you are leaving your trail you can leave an egg, prize, or piece of candy along the way. You put in a little work up front, but then you can sit back and cheer on the kids find their items and finally get to the end of the string… This is where the Easter Bunny put my basket :)

If you are looking for an inexpensive Easter Gift Idea – don’t forget about the FREE Photo Book from Shutterfly I told you about earlier today.

Have FUN!

frugal family fun

Frugal Family Fun – St. Patrick’s Day Fun

Since St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner I thought we would do some FUN crafts and snacks to celebrate.  Sadie and I have to work on her Leprechaun trap today for school :)

If you are headed out at all, don’t forget about the Arby’s Coupon for BOGO Reuben Sandwiches.  The coupon valid is valid this weekend only.

First up is a little Leprechaun Craft!

What You Need:

  • Toilet paper tube
  • Green craft foam
  • Acrylic paints: green, skin-tone, pink, and brown
  • Black permanent marker
  • Tacky glue
  • 4 brown pipe cleaners
  • Decorative button

What You Do:

  • First trace around the end of a toilet paper tube onto a piece of green craft foam.
  • Draw a 2 1/2-inch circle around the first circle, then cut them both out to create a hat top and brim and set them aside.
  • Using acrylic paints, paint the paper tube green. Add a skin-tone face and hands, plus rosy cheeks, as well as a band of brown paint around the back for hair.
  • Once the paint has dried, use a permanent marker to draw on facial and clothing details, then use tacky glue to stick on 3 coiled brown pipe cleaners: 2 in the back for hair and 1 around the face for a beard. For feet, fold another pipe cleaner in half, then tightly coil and pinch the ends, as shown.
  • Place the folded pipe cleaner inside the tube and glue the feet to the edge. Glue on the hat top and brim and a 5 1/2- by 1/2-inch strip of craft foam for arms.
  • Finally, glue a decorative button to the hat brim. If you want to see a HOW TO VIDEO of this craft – head here!

There are a bunch of St. Patrick’s Day themed events going on around my town for FREE – I’m sure there are in your neck of the woods too – The easiest thing to do is to search “Free Family St. Patrick’s Day activities in XXXX) and you’ll be surprised by all the local goodies you’ll find!

Need a sweet snack to help celebrate? I found adorable shamrock cookies :)

What You Need:

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup butter at room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp. vanilla extract
  • Green food coloring

What You Do:

  • Measure the flour, baking soda and salt into a medium-sized bowl. Stir well and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar with an electric mixer for about 1 minute. Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix until well combined.
  • Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter and sugar, mixing well after each addition. The dough should be stiff.
  • Add several drops of green food coloring. Knead the dough until the color is evenly distributed. (Make sure children wash their hands immediately after kneading–food coloring can be messy.)
  • Gather the dough into two balls, flatten into disks beginning at the edge of the dough and working toward the center. Cover with plastic and chill for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  • After the dough has chilled, place one half on a large piece of plastic wrap, cover with another piece of plastic wrap and then roll until it is 1/4-inch thick. Lift off the top sheet of plastic wrap and cut out shamrocks, beginning at the edge of the dough and working toward the center.
  • Place each shamrock on an ungreased baking sheet. Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake for 8 minutes or until the edges begin to lightly brown. Remove to a rack to cool. For particularly festive shamrocks, decorate them with green candies or frosting.
Makes about 34 adorable shamrock cookies!

I know I have said a couple times that Family Fun is one of my favorite websites – that’s where the goodies were found for today’s FUN too!

Have a safe and FUN St. Patrick’s Day!
